Sahiwal Cow Breed – Overall Experience:

Some twenty-five years back when life was not that complicated and urbanisation was still a yonder happening in the suburbs people had natural tendency to love and tend their cattle for they were still connected to their roots of farming activities.

I lived in suburb near Delhi, with my family owning a large piece of fertile land in nearby village.

My father gave us convent education but always inspired and educated us about cow rearing and farming activities.

We had a Pure Sahiwal whom we lovingly called Gauri. She was magnificent looking with large and bright eyes. She responded to my loving caresses and to my loving call. In my sad moments of loneliness, I found a peaceful solace in her company.

Then one late evening I witnessed the calf birth, the miraculous and extraordinary life coming to earth.

Gauri had become quite touchy and sensitive and looked for well being of her calf. She insisted that calf be placed or tied very near to her. It constantly stared in the direction of her calf as though tending it with her gaze.

Milking was again phenomena which held my rapt attention as my papa living patted her and milked her and she mooed and responded to every touch or call.

I sometimes felt this simple desi cow understood well what we wanted to convey to her and expressed herself in more like a humanly way.

Then suddenly the things changed and time took its toll. As I grew up I became a victim of English lifestyle and culture and thus was lost the great legacy of cow rearing, milk supply, butter and curds just disappeared from our dining plates.

I saw people selling their desi cows to slaughterhouses and bringing Jersey or other breeds in their homestead.

The natural settings of cowshed, the sand beds, the creepers and the cow feed underwent a drastic change.

It was more of like dog rearing which required immense inputs of resources and labour.

My Gauri my Sahiwal too was lost and gone but the memories of yesteryears can never be erased from my mind.
