GIR COW HISTORY!
WHO WERE THE ORIGINAL GIR COW BREEDERS
SINCE HUNDREDS OF YEARS?
MALDHARI TRIBE – ‘LION HEARTED MEN’
ORIGINAL GIR COW BREEDERS
Who supplied Gir cow fresh milk & Ghee to the palaces of kings!
Before we start our journey, let’s together travel few hundred years back, to the birthplace of Gir cow & listen to the tribes who were the original Gir cow professional breeders. The tribes of Gujarat nurtured & developed the breed, let’s gather some ancient wisdom & practices from the folklore.
Maldharis are known as men with LION HEART, because most probably only they can withstand the powerful sight of Gir lions in the close distance & share the homeland.
Maldhari literally means ‘Owner of animal stock’. Maldharis are brave nomadic tribal community who have been staying in the GIR FOREST along with the majestic Asiatic Gir lions & have taken care of Gir cows since ages. They are humble tribal people who have mastered the art of cow care in all simplicity & treat lions as pets.
Talk to the Maldhari man, you will see him pride his big pronounced moustache; with a sparkle in his eyes & his voice shall echo beautiful folklore stories about Gir cows.
GIR COW GAUPALAN ANCIENT PRACTICES!
“In earlier days, Maldhari roamed the gir forest along with gir cows. Being nomads we moved in search of pasture to pasture. We attended to cows open grazing on the banni grasslands in early morning around 4 a.m. onwards. Gir cows were used to the routine routes & practices. They enjoyed the lush green grasses, leaves, tree fodders, herbs-shrubs of the forest land. The calves jumped & moved alongside their mother cows. There was feeling of togetherness, happiness & comfort.
Our mighty Bulls gave confidence to the herd in the wild forest. Bulls & their natural procreation was nature’s answer to existence. Breeding happened under the sunshine naturally. Herds selected the best Bull breed by the LAW OF NATURE…….
‘DOMINANCE & FITNESS’
It was the law of nature, the bulls which established dominance among other bulls became the leader & created clear hierarchy among the bulls & cows. Thus natural breeding was restored. We had mastered our art of breed selection based on our observation & experiences since ages.
During scorching afternoons, we relaxed & slept leaning to gir cows in the grasslands under the tree shade. We played along with the herd, made sounds & noises of birds, animals we were exposed to Cows responded with curiosity, affection, sometimes never bothered about our pranks. Sometimes we just drank the rich gir cow milk in the grasslands just by sliding our mouth under her udder. After grazing time, we used to return to our ‘Wadahs’; natural enclosures by the ‘Gau-dhuli‘ time.
Our family members used to look forward to the Gau-dhuli as many times we carried back Wild honey, Forest flowers, Wild fruits, Just born calves & many times some interesting stories to share. By early evening we used to have our dinner & sleep in our simple small mud houses-Wadahs.
LATE EVENING & NIGHT was the time for our LION KING, we respected each other’s existence & space.”
‘SHIVA LINGAM’ SILVER RING –
“In olden days, most of Maldhari used to wear Silver finger rings with ‘Shiva Lingam design’ on their milking hands. The belief was, when we milked, the milk spilled over Shiva Lingam ring & we considered it as our humble offering of milk abhishekam to lord shivji”.
These words make me think & question about today’s complicated rituals. It made me realise ‘Simplicity’ in thinking & action is the best way of living. The above words clearly demonstrate Maldhari lived, celebrated & worshipped ‘gifted life’ in all simplicity & pure humbleness.
Various stories make many rub their eyes, feel the miracle stories as one travels across the region. Gir Cow World is truly magical. If you want to hear to some magical folklore, travel to the earthy tracts around the gir villages, you shall get to hear them in plenty for years to recall, wonder & feel. Gir Cow stories touch one & all …….a beautiful Leela of Krishna……..
Maldhari celebrates Krishna Janmashtami & their marriages are mostly held around the same time.
